Finding out where I come from through AncestryDNA

Were you one of those people inspired to find out your real heritage after watching this video? I certainly was!

Although I've always been told that I am 75% Serbian and 25% Croatian, I'd like to think there's more to me than that! AncestryDNA can help with that...AncestryDNA recently launched in the UK and Ireland – revolutionising the way that people can discover more about themselves and their family history and also connect with relatives.

I'm going to find out the percentages of where my ancestors come from and as a traveler, I'm super excited to see what diverse cultures I have in my blood!

AncestryDNA is offered by Ancestry – the world’s largest online family history resource – and uses advanced DNA technology to reveal genetic ethnicity and uncover new family connections with other people who have taken the test.

How does it work?
The AncestryDNA test uses microarray-based autosomal DNA testing, which surveys a person’s entire genome at over 700,000 locations via a simple saliva sample. Analysis of the DNA data provides a prediction of the locations of ancestors from 26 separate world-wide populations including Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia and South and North Africa.

In contrast to Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA tests, which only test one line of your family and generally provide information about ancestry several thousand years ago, the AncestryDNA autosomal test targets the last few hundred or thousand years.

A weekend in Berlin

Berlin is one of the cities I've always wanted to go to, after hearing some really cool stories from my mum and especially about the Berlin wall that came down in the year I was born.

Exploring Notting Hill Carnival

I know...This post is more than a little late. I’ve been a little busy exploring, and am totally guilty of neglecting the blog this summer. I’ve also had a lot of life changes, all for the good, and have been focusing on forging happinness, proving to myself that it really is a choice.

But enough about that…I wanted to share with you some photos from August’s Notting Hill Carnival, an event I have been going to for years now. It truly is a very unique event that captures one of the many cultural spirits of London.

Travel: A day in Venice

Venice seems to be one of those places everyone dreams of going to...and it was everything one would expect - dreamy canal ways, cute little bridges, alleys of traditional shops and all the while echoes of the Gondoleros singing in the distance.

My friend and I took a very convenient day trip while we were in Pula, Croatia, which costed us just around £90 return via a 3 hour boat! We just couldn't resist.

We took the Venezia Lines speed boat, and you can either book tickets online or in Pula town centre. The journey was comfortable, not fussy and they had a small cafe on board if you needed anything. We also paid a small amount for the transfer bus to the port, and a gondola ride with the boat tour company.

You can easily book everything once you get there, but as we had only one day in Venice we tried to book everything in advance!

The Gondoleros skilfully manoeuvred their beautiful boats through the narrow canals and past one another...

Something I didn't expect was the Gondoleros all singing! It wasn't even cheesy, they are pretty good!

Restaurants and hotels line the canals, where you can stop off for a little pasta or wine

We took a stroll through Piazza San Marco, where you can get (a very expensive!) coffee while being serenaded by a live violin and piano band

We visited at the end of August, and it was SCORCHING hot and humid...the only thing that made the day rather difficult!

Wearing
Vintage camisole
Topshop skort
Aldo sandals
Vintage hessian clutch bag
Ray Ban sunglasses

On the way to another attraction - the Rialto Bridge

Cute windows lined the narrow streets, with beautiful artwork and statues scattered everywhere...they are hard to spot if you don't look high up every once in a while!

While walking through Venice's residential streets it's easy to forget that you are surrounded by the sea and canals, which makes the sight of them even more magical

There is also an area with designer shops which I didn't expect to find, but we ended up buying some lovely Brazilian style bikinis in the Italian Yamamay store-make sure you go there as their stuff is great!

What you can't see here is our suffering from the heat!!

Venice is truly like a painting

The shops have the classic things to buy...Murano glass items, Venitian masks and touristy souvenirs. We opted for lace fans for the heat, and large tea towels with venice printed on them to take home.

One day in Venice, Italy was actually enough to get a taste of this little stunning city. I felt like a movie star being driven in the taxi boats (probably looking at too many pictures of George Clooney at the Venice Film Festival!) and I really enjoyed our little trip.

Like mentioned earlier, the only thing that bothered us was the excruciating heat, I really didn't expect it and it was very uncomfortable but apparently this is the norm for Venice. It was also at the height of tourist season so was extremely crowded everywhere, something that made the little bridges a little less romantic. We didn't take a map or guide book, we just walked around and got lost which was the best thing to do when there are too many tourists around. We ended up in quiet residential streets, sharing a delicious gelato and finally crossing the little bridges without having to push around with others.

I would recommend a long weekend in Venice, but be prepared to dig deep into your pockets (Private gondola rides are around £100!) and for the big crowds if you go in the summer.

I really hope this place doesn't lose it's charm, or sinks too quickly!!!

Travel: My summer holiday essentials

Apart from your obvious essentials like a toothbrush, make-up remover, etc. I also have the 'extras' essentials list of things I always take with me and can't love without...the things that make my holiday that little bit more special or easier.

For some travel inspiration check out my travel guides here

I'm already a convert when it comes to the 'pricy but so worth it' brand Piz Buin. This new tan accelerating sunscreen is a non sticky and non greasy formula, which absorbs instantly without leaving white marks. The weightless feel makes it perfect for fuss free application, but without compromising on the high level of protection. It can also be used on the face.

2. Hammamas cotton beach towel, £22-£35
I was recently gifted this towel and I absolutely love it. It's incredibly lightweight, pure cotton and absorbs water as much as a regular towel, making it the perfect beach accessory. The best thing about it is the fact that you can take it on short haul holidays in small luggage, and easily to the beach in your small bag, too. You can also use it as a makeshift beach cover, skirt or dress. It comes in LOTS of colours and different designs, check out their website for more options for women, kids, men and even the home. I want another one!!

If you are unfortunate enough to get bitten, Zap-It is perfect for soothing the itch. A tiny but effective piezo device that generates a harmless and mild (no stronger than a gentle pinch) low electrical impulse created by crystals to deliver harmless little ‘zaps’ which take the itch and scratch out of mozzie bites.

4. Canon 550D SLR 18M Digital Camera, Was £600, now £345
Nowadays, some people use their phones, GoPros, some retro cameras and others compact cameras when on holiday. It's incredible how much choice we have, but I always have my trusty SLR with me. It doesn't compare to any other compact camera, as this baby makes EVERYTHING look good (yes, even sweaty faces on a night out). It's a good size, not too heavy, and you can change the lenses or settings to take the most amazing holiday pictures. This one is an older model now but any SLR you get will do the trick.

5. Lonely Planet Books, £Prices vary
The Bible! I can never go without this, and I study it months prior to my trip to make sure I don't miss out on anything. Best place to buy the books is Amazon as there are always discounts on.

6. Compeed Blister Mix 5 Pain Relieving Plasters, £4.48
This. Is a GODSEND! I carry one of these genius products in every single handbag, as I now can't live without them. They are the only plasters that actually work when I get blisters from dancing, walking, hiking, etc. as you can apply them anywhere needed. They have a special cushion-y but transparent look and feel. I urge you to invest!!!

7. Gin Gins Caramel, £1.39 for a 31g box (Holland & Barret)
Theses sweets contain a massive 30% ginger per sweet and are proving very popular for travel sickness. I usually take special sickness pills but these actually worked a treat (see what I did there?) when I felt mildly uneasy on a snorkelling boat trip. Great as an alternative for those who don't like to take unnatural medicine.

8. Asos Leather Drawstring Backpack, £28
I hate big rucksacks, but can't deny their practicality, especially when on a cultural holiday! This one from Asos is stylish but has enough room for your guide book, bottle of water, bikini, and camera when on the go or on a scooter - whooosshhh!

9. Laura Mercier Almond Coconut Milk Body Butter, £27
There's nothing like that fresh smell and feeling of body butter right after a shower, and I'm a big fan of Laura Mercier's collection. I like to take a nice moisturiser with me on holiday to feel extra luxurious!

10. Estoremarket Worldwide Plug1A Multi-nation Travel Adapter, £10.99

A travel essential for everyone, but this specific plug is awesome. I got it on Amazon years ago and still use it to charge my phone, camera and even iPod as it has a usb hole.

11. Burt's Bees Super Shiny Mango Shampoo and Conditioner, £9.99
Along with luxurious moisturisers and essential suncreams, I also like to take natural shampoos and conditioners with me. It always adds to that blissful holiday feeling when you're not wearing make-up, your hair is all messed up and curly and you're eating fruit on the beach! Burt's Bees do a lovely set of Super Shiny Mango shampoo and conditioner, and they smell lovely. Fortified with Mango Seed Oil and Fig Extract, this nourishing natural hair care formula leaves my hair feeling soft, shiny and super silky (the conditioner has mango seed and avocado oils).

12. Piz Buin After Sun Soothing & Cooling Moisturising Lotion, £5.25
After sun lotions help moisturise dry skin and also help prolong your tan. It's an essential to have to make those sun hours worth it, and your tan last longer without peeling! If burnt, the best thing to use is pure Aloe Vera Gel, though.

13. Victoria's Secret Vanilla Lace Refreshing Body Mist, £12
Not as harsh as a perfume, it's the perfect spray on the beach or when you want to feel refreshed in the heat. It smells divine, sweet and sexy! Only downside is that it doesn't last long but you can spray it all over to top up.

14. KITE Abbey Sunglasses, £115
Another obvious holiday essential, but it's important to invest in a good pair of sunnies to protect your eyes properly. There is nothing worse than exposing your eyes to the sunshine through a poor UV protection. These sunnies from a new brand called KITE are cool but classic, and go with everything. I particularly like the gradient a-la-Chanel effect!

So there you have it, an unnecessarily loooong list of things I ALWAYS take on holiday. Hope some of my own discoveries will also be useful to you!

Travel: Day trip to Whitstable

England isn't the most glamorous of places to have a stay cation, but it certainly has a number of cute little fishing towns and lovely places to explore during a day trip!

I wanted to find an interesting town that wasn't your usual Oxford, Bath or Cambridge so decided to drive down to Whitstable, just an hour from London. It was easy to get to and there is a huge parking lot near the harbour which was perfect!

We spent a couple of hours at the harbour, taking photos of the colourful boats and on the lookout for yummy food. The weather wasn't at its best so I was kidding myself a little in this leather jacket, but apart from the wind it was a great day trip.

I'm wearing:
Leather jacket from Iceland
Twenty8Twelve jeans
Aldo sandals
New Look top
Zara bag
Zara scarf

We walked past an area filled with small shops that had a mix of independent stalls as well as your usual market stuff, and a few food stalls in between. If you like local produce such as jam this is the best place to get it.

As all the restaurants were booked up (it was Mother's Day), we went into the local fish market cafe to taste the fresh sea food.

The fried mussels were delicious, I had two portions. They were absolutely huge, too!

We discovered a vintage market nearby, too with this beautiful pup!

I found the hessian clutch on the left, for only £5, to match my lighter one. They're great for the summer and for holidays.

Bicycles covered in knitted colours, so cool!

I loved this little town!
