Food: Quick & easy health tips (Pt 1)

It's 2014. Everyone wants to detox. Everyone's looking for a way to be healthier. And so am I. :) Yes, it's a cliche but it's all good for you so I don't see why not. I'm on a journey to find the best ways to alter my lifestyle towards a healthier one and I thought I would share this with you. I absolutely hate exercise and prefer dance class, so this will be more of a goal to find alternative ways of eating, drinking and behaving healthier on a day to day basis and making it part of everyday life...the easy way.

This post is the first in the series...hope you find the tips I've gathered from nutritionists useful.

Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

1. Drink a luke warm glass of water and fresh lemon juice in the morning
Citric acid which is in lemon juice helps the body's enzymes function and this stimulates your liver and helps it detox. It should help with energy, and has 187 percent of the amount of vitamin C you need in a day! It's a great antioxidant that helps boost your immune system and perfect start to the day. You will find this in many diet or nutrition advice books, and it will become a craving once you start!

2. Swap your oil for coconut oil
Coconut oil is a very versatile superfood and is rich in essential fatty acids like omega-3 and lauric acid, and is naturally cholesterol free. Nutritionist Madeleine Shaw who I met at a Sure deodorant event recently also says it can help you lose weight, improve your skin and fight viral diseases. Apparently the medium-chain fatty acids are easily absorbed, then converted into energy in your liver instead of fat, and help stimulate metabolism and activity of your thyroid. Pretty cool.

3. Try to go to sleep at the same time every night
This is a no brainer really. We all know we need a good night's sleep, and I think most of us are in denial about this. We stay up late watching TV, go out drinking or work late and constantly disrupt our body clocks. I feel INCREDIBLE after a good night's sleep, especially if I maintain a good routine for my body to get used to. Simple, and effective.

4. Drink lots of water
I know this is something you are told by people every day...and so am I. But I never drink enough, and as a result have frequent headaches. It's such a simple solution, but it also helps with energy, sleep, and weight loss. It's not a weight loss solution of course, but will help keep your cravings at bay and balance body fluids. The number of times I've had odd cravings that never subsided were purely because my body was thirsty, but I reached for the chocolates! Another benefit of keeping hydrated is that it can help keep your skin looking good and wrinkle free for longer. Drinking at least one litre of water a day is one of my goals this year, I'll let you know how I get on as I'm pretty bad at this.

5. Exercise
Another no brainer, but hard for some couch potatoes like me. However there are hundreds of benefits to regular exercise and it will benefit everyone in the long run...when you're old and in pain! Exercise will also help you eat whatever you like and enjoy the food, without the guilt and weight gain. Your mood will improve, you will have a better emotional balance, and your confidence will become stronger due to the chemicals released in your brain whilst working out. And you don't have to commit to an actual workout, at least take the stairs or walk rather than taking the bus every day...it all makes a difference.

So whether you're looking to lose weight, become fitter, or just want to maintain a good, healthy lifestyle...I wish you good luck and hope I can do it, too! It's really not hard!

*I am not a professional nutritionist or doctor, so take this advice lightly and find what's best for your body! I do not endorse any of the products mentioned, and am not paid to feature them. I will only feature things that I have tried and tested and that have worked for me, but am not in any way entitled to give medical advice.
